Our Story

We are a family of martial arts students and instructors who work hard to bring out the best qualities in each other.

Our school follows the five tenets of Tae Kwon Do:

  • Courtesy – Showing respect to others around you, especially superiors
  • Perseverance – Have patience and keep practicing.
  • Integrity – Always doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
  • Self-Control – The ability to control oneself in sparring and all aspects of their life.
  • Indomitable Spirit – Never giving up, even during the toughest of times.

Our Instructors

Master Rex Hammersley

Master Rex Hammersley is the owner of Hammer Martial Arts and is a 6th degree black belt in Taekwondo. Master Hammersley has studied 9 styles of Martial arts in the last 30 years, He is a member of the American Martial Arts Academy (AMAA), the Indiana Martial Arts Federation and the American Hapkido Federation. In his time of instructing, Master Hammersley has created 29 black belt students since 1991.

David Soruco

Mr. Soruco studies Hapkido under Master Don Burns of Bloomington and has studied martial arts for over 20 years. He also studies William C. C. Chen's T'ai Chi Ch'uan under his Instructor Charles Pearce of Bloomington. He used to run the Self Defense Club at Indiana University and taught HPER electives there for many years. He also has a black belt in Taekwondo through Master Burns.

Master Rob Keeler

Rob Keeler has 10 years experience in TaeKwonDo and 5 years experience in Hapkido. Rob holds a 6th degree in TaeKwonDo and a red belt in Hapkido. Additonally, he has 5 years experience coaching wrestling and works as an art and music teacher in Wayne Township. Rob teaches classes at our Danville facility and is versatile in multiple martial arts.

Master Ross Carpenter

Ross is a 4th degree black belt and has been practicing martial arts since he was a child. Ross won the Indiana Martial Arts Association State championship in breaking. Ross assists with tutoring students and truly represents martial arts with his honesty integrity and perseverance.

Chad Creasey

Chad is a first degree blackbelt Hapkido instructor with over 15 years’ experience. Chad has developed skills in Boxing, Kali and Jujitsu and is versed in several martial arts styles.

Kevin Muller

Kevin Muller has been martial artist sine age 17 and studied multiple martial arts in college and in the military. Kevin is a retired army veteran and has been with Hammer martial arts since 2014. Kevin currently is an 1rst degree instructor in TKD and participates in our Hapkido and MMA classes.

Wayne Loney

Wayne has been a student and instructor at Hammer Martial Arts since 2008. He is a 1st degree black belt in Taekwondo, holds a 2nd degree black belt in Hapkido and will receive his 3rd degree in the near future. Wayne also Is a 2nd class brown belt in Judo. After serving in the United States Marine Corps he joined the Law Enforcement field where he has served over 37 years serving fugitive warrants and currently working extraditions. Wayne is currently serving the State of Indiana as a Sergeants Major in the Indiana Guard Reserve as the Provost Sergeant Major, teaches at the Military Police Academy in combative's, report writing and general law enforcement subjects. Wayne is a senior instructor and teaches the United States Hapkido Federations style of Hapkido. Wayne also specializes in a combat version of Hapkido which focuses on street encounters and developing a survival mind set. This training evolves intense body mechanics and muscle memory.

Katherine Peterson

Katherine is our new Lil Dragons instructor in Danville. Katherine is a 2nd degree blackbelt and has been with Master Hammersley over 10 years.

Phil Dunn

Phil Dunn started martial arts training at the age of 15 in Kyokushin Karate, and later World Oyama Karate. Phil is a proud Iraq war veteran. He joined the military and served 13 years as a Hospital Corpsman, and trained in several martial arts at various commands where he was stationed. This included training in Kenpo, Shorei Goju Ryu, MCMAP, Hapkido, Tae Kwon Do, and Aikido martial arts. Phil currently holds a Brown Belt/ Black tip in Oyama Karate; Deputy BB in Hapkido, and Black Belt in Tae kwon Do. His dedication to martial arts and discipline makes Phil an invaluable asset to Hammer Martial Arts and a highly respected martial artist.

Drew Link

Drew Link is our HMA instructor for Brazilian Jui Jitsu. Drew currently holds a Brown belt black tip in Kyokushin karate and is a Brown belt with 9 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Drew has extensive skills and has competed in multiple styles, including Boxing, Muay Thai, Kyokushin karate, Judo, Wrestling and most currently Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA. Drew's Classes are located at our Danville Facility, and his classes offer a great physical workout and intense experience in ground fighting and self-defense. Drew is a very personable and well-respected martial artist. Drew works hard to ensure all students have a great experience and deep understanding of escapes, locks and chokes.
